Abstract:
Intended for use by local governments that have set affordable housing as a priority, this manual reflects 10 years of theoretical and practical experience in its presentation of a set of development practices that can assist in the delivery of affordable housing. The manual focuses on land development techniques, construction practices and building codes, zoning provisions, and subdivision requirements. It also suggests ordinances and code language that can help modernize a community's regulations and ensure the cost-effective production of safe, decent housing, and reflects current research-based advances in both land development and construction techniques. In most cases, these advances have been successfully applied in various communities across the Nation under HUD's Joint Venture for Affordable Housing program. This program has proven that a system of modernized regulations enhances rather than compromises the quality of neighborhoods. A 42-item bibliography is included.
