Robert R. Taylor Homes/NorthSide Revitalization

Wilmington, North Carolina

The Robert R. Taylor Homes/ NorthSide Revitalization received the HUD Secretary's Opportunity and Empowerment Award for providing quality homes for seniors and low-income families and successfully transforming the surrounding neighborhood. Utilizing multiple sources of funding, the Wilmington Housing Authority demolished the public housing on the site and rebuilt the property with a mix of rental and ownership housing. The resulting development includes units designed to help seniors age in place, as well as affordable units for low- and moderate-income residents, with architecture that is in tune with the nearby historic district. Additionally, the site design reconnects the development with the surrounding street grid.
