Comparison with 1993 and 1995 Surveys 6/28/99

This archive contains summary tables compiled using 1997 AHS data by an independent contractor. They are intended to give analysts a quick look at the data and the changes in values from the previous surveys. Please note that these tables are PRELIMINARY and subject to change as and when the dataset or table specifications are modified. Note especially that as of this revision date variables related to income are not reliable. Most tables involving income appear as all zeros. Even those with nonzero income values should not be relied upon. In many other cases, the underlying microdata are correct, but the table specifications are still being revised. These revisions will undoubtably change some of the values. HUD will release revised files as necessary.

ALLTABS.TAB
This is a text file containing the 1997 equivalents of the tables in the 1995 national publication and supplement. The national publication tables are 2.1, 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 2.5, 2.6, 2.7, 2.8, 2.9, 2.10, 2.11, 2.12, 2.13, 3.14, 3.15. Supplement tables are 1.4 and 1.5. These tables cover virtually all variables and form a good cross section of data for quality control checking. The comparison tables contain about 3,000 AHS estimates. The tables were designed to mimic the rows and columns of the 1995 publications as closely as possible. Because of instrument and design changes, it is not possible to mimic all tabulations. The tables in the 1997 report will be somewhat different.

ALLCOMP.LST
This is a text file comparing the 1997 data to similar data in the 1993 and 1995 surveys. The 1993 and 1995 counts were copied from the published reports, not computed from the public use files. The comparisons in this document were computed by an automated process that flagged 1997 counts which are either 1) less than 80% of the minimum of the earlier years or 2) more than 125% of the maximum of the earlier years. (Table 1-4 uses threshholds of 70% and 130%, respectively). Note that if the 1997 value is between the two previous survey values, the "Comparison" column shows a ratio of 1.00. Additional flags were manually added during the quality control process.
