A survey, which is the basis for this report, assessed public awareness of and support for fair housing law and individuals' perceptions concerning whether they had ever experienced housing discrimination. The survey involved a series of scenarios in which respondents were asked whether specific behaviors were covered by existing federal fair housing law or not. The findings show that there is widespread knowledge of and support for most fair housing protection and prohibitions. However, the public understands and supports some areas of the law more than others. The report offers HUD's reason for encouragement in its continued efforts to combat housing discrimination and identifies specific areas in which public information and attention needs to be directed.
