| Description |
This article describes the expedited review process for affordable housing developments in Orange County, Florida. The program is administered by the Orange County Division of Housing and Community Development to bring affordable housing to the market as quickly as possible and reduce the carrying costs on land, thereby reducing housing costs. A developer qualifies for an expedited review if the Division certifies the development as affordable housing. Orange County makes the program possible by anticipating affordable housing applications, bypassing review steps, and setting time limits for each step in the review process. The program is helping Orange County reach its goal of 48,000 additional affordable housing units by 2010. The article states that the process reduces approval time by 60 days or more and can be applied by virtually any municipality. |
