This site, prepared by the Chesterfield County, Virginia Department of Building Inspection, describes the various types of construction and the types of permits needed to carry out residential improvements.
According to the site, the County requires a building permit for a number of activities including: building a porch or deck, building a detached garage or car port, building an additional room or finishing an attic or basement.
The County explains that the contractor needs an electrical permit for upgrading service or installing new wiring. It also describes situations where a contractor needs to obtain a gas, mechanical or plumbing permit. The site also contains information on the type of activities that do not require permits. These include replacing plumbing fixtures, replacing roofs, installing storm windows, replacing floor covering, replacing kitchen cabinets, adding insulation and replacing an electric furnace. This site was accessed in October 2003.
